Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Street begging has long been a social and economic challenge in Kano Municipal Local Government, Kano State, reflecting deep-seated issues such as poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment. Print media, as an influential medium of mass communication, has the potential to raise awareness, educate the public, and advocate for policies to address this issue. Through investigative reporting, features, and editorials, newspapers and magazines can shed light on the causes and consequences of street begging while promoting sustainable solutions. Recent studies highlight the role of print media in mobilizing stakeholders, including governments, NGOs, and communities, to tackle societal challenges (Yusuf & Abubakar, 2023). However, the effectiveness of print media in eradicating street begging depends on consistent, unbiased, and impactful reporting. This study examines the role of print media in addressing street begging in Kano Municipal Local Government.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Street begging persists in Kano Municipal Local Government despite government interventions and public awareness campaigns. While print media has the capacity to inform, educate, and influence public opinion, its coverage of street begging remains inconsistent and often lacks depth.
